Our Story

Founded in 1994 by Bruce Smuts, Active Education specialises in school sports coaching. We train coaches to run physical education lessons, provide extracurricular and age-group team coaching as well as organising sports days, tournaments and festivals. 120 full-time coaches work in over one hundred government and private schools in Jo’burg and Durban. We have an administrative complement of seven staff. Our office is located in Benoni, Johannesburg.

We Focus On Ensuring That Children Have A Fun And Creative Sports Experience.

Our Kids In Action Programme Uses Positive Teaching Methods, Creativity, Specialised Sporting Equipment And Exercises To Equip Children Aged Three To Seven With General Sporting Competency: Flexibility, Agility And Ball Skills. Life Skills, Like Persistence, Courage, Cooperation, Decision-Making, Self-Worth, Goal Setting And Confidence, Are Built Into The Lessons That We’ve Designed. Our Kids In Action Coaches Are Specifically Selected For Their Ability To Communicate With Young Children; The Bond That Develops Between A Child And Their Coach Is Integral To A Successful Coaching Process.

In School, Our Active Education Primary And Active Education High Programmes Kicks In. Run During School Time, Our Coaches Teach Age-Specific Lessons In Codes Selected By The School; We Offer Coaching In 16 Disciplines Ranging From Swimming To Rugby, Cricket, Tennis, Waterpolo And Even Skateboarding. Coaches Are Chosen For Their Sporting Abilities As Well As An Affinity For Working With Juniors Or Seniors And The Equipment They Use Is Designed And Sized For Children.

Active Education Coaches Are Favoured For Extra-Curricular Coaching As They Are Reliable, Responsible And Consistent. These Professional And Experienced Coaches Nurture Their Teams, Referee Games And Accompany Them To Interschool Matches.

Our Training Division Concentrates On Teacher Development In Physical Education And Life Orientation. We Have Trained In Excess Of 1000 Teachers Since June 2006.

We Regularly Partner With Companies For Once-Off Sport-Based Activations And Long-Term Community Initiatives. These Projects Usually Also Include Life Skills Instruction And Hiv Awareness Using Sport As A Vehicle For Instruction. Clients Have Included Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Mtn, Milo, Fnb, Lenovo, Virgin Atlantic And A Host Of Well-Known Companies And Organisations.

As A Service Provider For Unicef’s Sport For Development (Sfd) Programme, We Employ An Additional 28 Coaches (Full-Time And Part-Time), Three Regional Managers And A Project Manager To Oversee The Coaching Of Some 36,000 Children In 71 Schools In Three Provinces. Sfd Coaches Are Recruited From Communities Around The School. They’re Trained In Sports Coaching, Life Orientation And Life Skills Instruction. A Mass Talent Identification Programme Is Overseen By Our Sports Scientist.

Ed, The Red Crocodile, Is Our Much-Loved Mascot. Adored By Children, Ed Takes Pleasure In Participating In Active Education’s Fun Games At Sports And Fun Days.
