More learners reached during National Transport Month

As part this year’s National Transport Month, the Department of Basic Education has reaffirmed its support to the Imperial Road Safety Safe Scholars Campaign that is currently making its way around schools.

Says Berenice Francis, Group Commercial Executive at Imperial: “With the start of National Transport Month in October, as Imperial, we wanted to highlight our programmes towards addressing road safety at all levels - including the sixth launch of our Car Seats for Kids Campaign, as well as Safe Scholars, both key initiatives to addressing safer mobility and transport for road users.”

“It is for this reason that we welcome the continued support that we receive from the Department of Basic Education, in helping us successfully drive this initiative across the country in those regions where learners commute to and from school for long distances by foot, particularly in support of this commerative month.”

Launched in 2015, Imperial Road Safety’s Safe Scholars campaign has made its way around South Africa to generate awareness around road safety among learners while also providing them with reflective sashes which thanks to the Department’s support have been made a mandatory part of these children’s school uniform.

Since the start of National Transport Month, the campaign has visited schools in the Gauteng Province including Lebone, Malerato and Matlapaneng Primary Schools, where learners have been taught about the fundamentals of road safety with the help of facilitators from Active Education and supported by Imperial’s road safety mascot, Bongie - Buckle Up Buddy, who is a fun loving bush baby character. Bongie – Buckle Up Buddy goes to each activation and aids the programme by resonating with the children and communicating key road safety messages, including buckling up, crossing the road, and basic road usage as pedestrians and drivers.

Mr Paseka Njobe Director for School Safety at the Department of Basic Education adds; “Many crashes that we experience on our roads are unnecessary and can be avoided. Therefore, an initiative like the Imperial Road Safety Safe Scholars Campaign contributes to the learner road safety through the roadshows which go a long way in developing literate road users who also abide by the law. Further to this, the Department has ensured that road safety education is integrated into the curriculum across all grades in the schooling sector.”

“While we had initially set out to reach 300 schools with the launch of this campaign, thanks to the support of the Department of Basic Education, we have managed to reach over 1 277 schools and interacted with a record breaking 1.1 million learners, and I believe that we will continue on this path towards achieving less pedestrian incidents, beyond National Transport Month, concludes Francis.”

Bullying denies participants these rights and can result in feelings of disgrace, embarrassment, shame or intimidation. Let's Play in partnership with Active Education has launched 'Safe Zones' as a pilot phase in two communities - every Saturday morning we run a festival of sport, this lasts from 0800 to 1300. The festivals will be consistent and occur every week.
Here the learners know there is no pressure, no expectations and no bullying. 49 children attended the first event in Orange Farm this weekend." - Let's Play

Child Protection Week

Child Protection Week

28 May - 04 June 2017

National Child Protection Week kicked off this week and aims to bring awareness to care for and protect children. It allows us to draw attention to the issues, successes and recognize what must still be done.

As a society we have a responsibility to protect our children and ensure that they don’t suffer at the hands of abuse.

By encouraging participation through interventions like the Let’s Play Physical Education Challenge, Road Safety Campaigns, Sports & Physical Education in schools, children quickly learn that they are part of a team and are not isolated.

This encourages dialogue amongst peers & leading to a better understanding and decision making process, ultimately making the individual less of a target for abuse.
